All Things Change
by Gary Woods
Recently I updated all four of our Macs to Lion 0SX 10.7 and all our iOS devices to iOS 5. I was so proud of myself I could hardly stand it. There are all kinds of new features to be perused and utilized but one thing that didn't work anymore was AirPrint, the wireless printing service that allows you to print from your iPad to a printer attached to your network. I wrote about a free piece of software I'd configured to make AirPrint work on non-AirPrint printers a few months back but now it no longer worked.
So, what to do? I hunted around for about a minute and came up with FingerPrint by Collobos http://www.collobos.com/. This little $9.99 program on the PC and $7.99 on the Mac finds all of the printers that are both directly attached and networked with your computers and when you tap the little arrow on your iPad or iPhone and select print those printers are there for the taking. The program has a very simple user interface that uses Bonjour zero configuration networking to make setup simple and painless.
But, and here's the really cool part, not only can you print from your iOS device the program also gives you the opportunity to send the file to your computer or put it into your Dropbox account. Also, if you're running FingerPrint on the Mac you can send the file and attachments directly to iPhoto.
If you've always wanted to print from your iPhone or iPad check out FingerPrint. You can give it a try for a week to see if it makes sense, then if you love it for less than $8 on the Mac and $10 on the PC you're printing your little heart out.
