Beam Me Up
by Gary Woods
Out here at Woods Manor we have the 3rd Generation Apple TV ($99) hooked up to the 55" Samsung Plasma which allows us project what's on our iPads and Macs wirelessly onto the TV. It's pretty cool because Honey Bunny's daughter shows up with the latest movies on her iPad and we spend the evening oohing and aahing our way into the night.
But, I know there are some of you out there in the Apple community whose Macs are not quite up to snuff to make the magic wireless connection to the TV. To bridge this gap if you have OSX 10.6 or newer running on a 64 bit Intel Mac from 2007 or later you're in luck. There's a plug-in called Beamer (http://beamer-app.com/) that sells for $15 and it streams to a second or third generation Apple TV.
When you start the App it shows all compatible Apple TVs on your network and after you choose the one you want you just drop a movie file into the Beamer window and seconds later the movie starts playing through your Apple TV.
Even if you have the latest Mac Operating System, 10.8, the App is useful because the Mountain Lion OS mirrors the entire OSX interface whereas Beamer streams just the video. Unfortunately DVDs played on your Mac don't work with Beamer but if you're cool enough have a 55" TV I'll bet you're cool enough to have the approximately $50 it costs for a DVD player.
Anyway, Beamer is a fun low cost App that will make looking at movies residing on your Mac play just swimmingly on your Apple TV.
