Book 'em Dano by Gary Woods
There's no doubt that Amazon.com is one of my favorite sites. It's gotten to where I start most every search for whatever I'm looking for at Amazon. I'll check other sites to be sure, but usually Amazon gets the deal.
So when Amazon gets excited about something I just gotta' check it out. And what they're excited about now is e-books. These devices that allow you to download and read a book on a handheld device have been around for a while but what Amazon thinks is cool is the Kindle (www.kindle.com) e-book reader ($399).
The Kindle comes with 180MB of user-accessible memory and supports SD Cards up to 2GB. Instead of an LCD screen the device has a 6-inch electronic paper display from E Ink. The monochrome display, which is designed to save power supports 4 levels of grayscale.
What's cool about the Kindle is that it's integrated with a 3G cellular radio, which allows the device to connect to Amazon's Whispernet EvDO service for wireless transmission of e-books. This means that you don't need a PC to find a book. You just browse the Kindle store and download what you want. Downloads take about minute and the new book releases cost $10. Currently they have 90,000 titles available with more on the way.
You can browse the net with the Kindle, but with only 4 levels of grayscale it's not gonna' look great. But it would be cool to grab a look at wikipedia for a little more in depth look at what you're reading.
