I'm on a lot of email lists and the other day I got one from an outfit called the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD.) It turns out they're one of the world's largest providers of applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy and they've created a free iOS application called Camp Discovery which can run on any iOS device with 6.0 or above installed and looked great on my iPad 3.
The Camp Discovery app teaches over 50 common household and community objects to children through a series of various levels. Children match identical objects, similar objects, and comprehend object names. If the child responds correctly they receive both visual and auditory reinforcement to keep them motivated and engaged. If the child responds incorrectly there is a prompting system which guides the person to the correct answer.
When the user begins a new session there is a preference assessment which rewards the child for a correct response and personalizes the experience so it is unique for every person. Then, that preference assessment is administered regularly to keep the game reinforcing their responses throughout the experience.
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), one in 88 children in American is diagnosed with autism which makes it more prevalent than juvenile diabetes, pediatric cancer and pediatric AIDS combined.
You can find the app in the App Store by searching Camp Discovery and if you'd like to know more about the organization they're online at www.centerforautism.com.
