If, Then, When?
by Gary Woods
In computer programming and some Excel formulas there are what are called If, Then submissions. Basically what they do is "If" a certain set of parameters are met "Then" something happens.
Recently I found a cool little free App in the App Store called IFTTT (https://ifttt.com/) that uses If, Then submissions which can be programmed by the user to do all kinds of fun little things.
The Application creates what are called recipes that do things like uploading all your new iOS photos to Google Drive or saving all your Instagram photos to Dropbox. If you use Google Calendars with iOS Reminders you can automatically send completed Reminders to your Google Calendar or all of your Tweets to a Google Spreadsheet. I set up a couple of recipes that send a Text to me with the daily weather report and another that sends a Text if it's going to rain today.
To create a custom Recipe first you choose a Trigger Channel from thing like Craigslist, ESPN, iOS Contacts and Linkedin. Then, you select a destination for what you first selected from things like Email, Text or Facebook. After that you choose a Trigger for what event is required to happen in order for the data to be sent.
Finally you authorize the various activities you selected to access your information and then just sit back and watch the magic happen.
IFTTT is a cool, fun, free application. If you've got a piece of information that you'd like to automatically be sent to you or have that Tweet or Facebook post you just wrote to be archived someplace you should check it out.
