Is That You Growling??
by Gary Woods
Growl is a cool little Mac utility that notifies you when certain events occur. If there's an update available for a piece of software or if you missed a message from someone Growl pops up and lets you know. The app is very similar to the notifications system that's part of iOS 5 for you devices so I love that functionality.
The new wrinkle that's been added to Growl is GrowlVoice 1.6.1 which combines the power of Google Voice with the convenience of Growl notification system. When you receive a text, miss a call, or get a voicemail through Google Voice, a Growl notification alerts you. The app's menu-bar icon also turns blue and displays an updated count of missed events.
When you receive a notification concerning a text message you can view the conversation and even reply. Click the alert for voicemail to read the message transcript and even play back the actual message.
Going deeper into the program's menus lets you mark messages as unread, archive then, or delete than, as well as view time stamps and other message information. GrowlVoice also grabs names and photos for contacts from Google Contacts of Mac OS X's Address Book.
I've used Growl for a long time to keep my Mac up to date with programs that don't show up in system updates so for me the $1.99 app is a must have. If you want to add a little more functionality to your setup it'll set you back $4.99 for GrowlVoice http://www.growlvoice.com/ but you can download a trial and see if it works for you.
