It's What's Outside That Counts
by Gary Woods
As I keep telling you people it's a good idea to back up your data. And the best way to backup your information is outside your computer so that if your computer gets lost or stolen you still have all your data. But do you listen..... ?????
Lately there are a lot of huge external Hard Drives that have come on the market. I've seen drives all the way from 500GB to 1TB. There are a number of ways that these drives can connect to your computer including eSATA 300, eSATA 150, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0. The zippiest method these days seems to eSATA 300 but there are some cases where FireWire 400 noses eSATA out.
The coolest drive I saw was by a company with the unlikely name of Apricorn. It uses either eSATA or USB 2.0 and has a 500 GB capacity. The model I saw is called the EZ Bus Desktop SATA and retails for $229. That's a lot of drive for just over $200.
For just a little bit more, retailing for $300 the LaCie d2 Quadra has the same capacity of 500 GB but has eSATA 150 instead of the eSATA 300 protocol of the Apricorn drive. eSATA 300 is supposed to be about twice as fast as eSATA 150 but interestingly enough the file transfer time for the LaCie drive was just 87 seconds only 11 seconds slower than the Apricorn Drive.
If you haven't backed up your data this is good time to think about one of these external hard drives.
