Let's Form a Group
by Gary Woods

I've seen some computer desktops that were truly ugly. There are files and programs all over them and really I have no idea how the user can pick out what they're looking for on them. At least with Finder you can sort stuff by Name or Date Modified but when everything is on the desktop where it lands is where you put it. Wherever that was???

To help add a little order to the chaos I found Desktop Groups 1.4.1 by Kitestack Software which goes for $9.99 in the App Store. With Desktop Groups you can group related files on your desktop, add or remove files via drag & drop and freely move groups around. Also you can resize groups by dragging either edge of corner, rename the group by double clicking on the group title and with context menus you have even more options.

For the files inside the group you can set it up so that file names are displayed to the right of the icons, you can also adjust the opacity of the title and group background and change the background color as well as hide the reflections and adjust the grid size.

The current version of Desktop Groups is 1.4.1 and with it they've added support the MacBook Pro with Retina display and addressed an issue where a group would minimize while the Quick Look window was open.

If you can't find your way around your own desktop it might be time to give Desktop Groups a look.
