Local Boy Makes Good
by Gary Woods
Back in College I was moved into a place when my stereo was setup. I ran the wires under the windows and in back of the couch and I was stylin'. Later on when Surround Sound became a big deal more wires were run for the rear speakers, the sub-woofer and the satellites. Man it was a mess.
There's a local company called Sonos that makes that setup infinitely easier. They use wireless technology to provide whole-house coverage that ensures synchronous music playback and avoids sources of wireless interference.
They're big deal is the multi-room system. They look at the system as a whole and deliver synchronized music to every room with total flexibility and total control. To get started the company recommends the Sonos Bundle which includes two Sonos ZonePlayers and a dedicated, handheld Sonos Controller. The ZonePlayers include the Controller for Mac of PC so you can control all your music and all your rooms from any desktop or laptop computer.
There are models of ZonePlayers, one has a built-in 55W per channel digital amplifier which connects to your speakers and the other is a non-amplified unit that connects directly to your home theater receiver, stereo system and more so you can instantly add music to the audio equipment you already own.
If you've got an iPhone or iPod touch you can increase your control options with the free Sonos Controller for iPhone app. When you're ready to spread your tunes around the whole house just get more ZonePlayers and Controllers. You can check them out on the internet at www.sonos.com.
