Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside
by Gary Woods
Back in 1944 and '45 there were two great running backs for Army's Football Team. They were called Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside. Glenn Davis and "Doc" Blanchard were great running backs but this isn't a story about them; this is about a speaker for your iPod which just loves to be both Indoors and Outdoors. The Soundcast OutCast ($700) by Soundcast Systems (www.soundcastsystems.com ) includes an iCast transmitter which captures analog output from your iPod and streams it to the OutCast on the same frequency which most Wi-Fi routers use. If you don't use an iPod or you want music from your PC the 1/8" headphone jack on the back of the iCast becomes a line-level input.
This unit is no small sound system. It pumps out 100 watts to the four 3 inch high-frequency speakers and the 8 inch down firing bass speaker. On top of the OutCast there are switches with which you can control forward/backward, play/pause and volume on a docked iPod. There is no display so you'll have to have your playlist prebuilt or just trust to the magic of shuffle mode.
The OutCast can be up to about 135 feet away from the iCast transmitter and it can stand up to the weather. It runs on NiMH batteries which deliver up to 10 hours of audio on a charge so you can party into the night.
If you want to hear your tunes outside while leaving your iPod inside check out the OutCast.
