No Dupes Please
by Gary Woods
When you start synchronizing your handheld devices with the database that resides on your computer or in the cloud inevitably duplicate entries will appear. On one device you might have a listing for Gary Woods on another a listing for G Woods and on a third a listing for Gary James Woods. The problem is that they all have slightly different information not to mention the slightly different names.
In Outlook to get rid of this problem I've got a program called NoMoreDupes. It scans the whole database for identical contacts, calendar events, notes and even emails. When it finds them it shows you what it has found and gives you the chance to combine them or delete them. The program costs around $40 per year.
On the iPhone and iPad there's a program called Dup Remover which I think currently costs $4.99 in the App Store and does a similar job with contacts as NoMoreDupes in Outlook but it doesn't scan calendar and notes.
Now, with iOS and Mac OSX there is a free way to clean up your database. When you find a duplicate entry in either your Phone or Contacts app, open the duplicate contact and tap Edit in the upper right corner. Scroll down and select Link Contacts. Then scroll to the selected duplicate contact name and tap Link in the upper right corner. If you have more than one example of an entry for the same contact, select Link Contacts and repeat. When you're finished tap Done and all those selected entries will be linked.
You know it's time to start cleaning up your database so let's get to it!!
