Out with the Old!!!!
by Gary Woods It turns out that December is the biggest month for buying new computers. New computers often mean, "What do I do with my old computer?" I've seen some pretty cool aquariums and planters made out of old computers, but if you're interested in something a little less fishy or dirty here's some thoughts. There is actually a pretty good market for used computers. A lot of people only use a computer to get on the Internet or write a letter. It doesn't take much of a computer to do that, which means your old computer could be just what someone else needs. Don't expect to get much, but what the hey.... If that doesn't interest you, many school districts could use your old computer. Some PC makers even have donation programs. Dell for example, works with a foundation that provides computers to disabled children http://www.dell.com/recycling Gateway buyers can request a recycle/donation form, which, when validated by a recycling center or charity group, entitles the donor to discounts on future purchases. If none of that interests you please don't just throw it away. There is an organization called the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition http://www.svtc.org that estimates that consumer electronics constitute 40 percent of the lead found in landfills. Other toxic materials found in computers include such things as cadmium, barium and mercury. If all else fails give Marborg a call at 805-963-1852 and they'll tell you how to recycle your computer.
