Pretty as a Picture!
by Gary Woods Digital cameras are one of the coolest inventions ever. Unfortunately I see a lot of pretty awful pictures taken with these great devices so I thought I'd share with you some ways to make those pictures better. For casual group portraits first find some shade avoiding direct sunlight because it makes people squint. Then, center the focus on the cheek of one of the people in the group. Half-squeeze the shutter to lock focus and exposure, then re-frame the shot to include everyone. Now shoot as many shots as you can before they begin to throw things at you. Children in motion are always difficult to capture. Again use the half-cocked technique previously mentioned, only do it as you pan the camera along in the direction of the kid in motion. It doesn't matter what happens to the background, as long as the kid is in the frame and pre-focused. Again, keep shooting until the kid sprays a hose at you. Sunny daytime shots are always tough. For these turn on the flash and set it to fire every time. This is usually called "fill-flash". This will fill the shot with light on what would otherwise be dark shadowy faces and washed out colors. Now here are a couple of general tips. First, smile at people and they'll smile back at you. Second always ask permission then let them see the photo and delete it if they don't like it.
