Road Trip, Part 3
by Gary Woods
Once you/re at your location and trying to find your way around then Google Maps is your best friend. This is one of those apps that you can't believe you got along without before it came along. It features turn-by-turn navigation that's detailed and accurate and has public transportation instructions which worked great last time I was in San Francisco.
If you're driving around your destination or even at home for that matter then an app called Waze Social GPS, Maps & Traffic is something you should get. I've written about this app before and what it adds to your experience is that you get real time information from people on the network as to traffic conditions other things that will affect your travel.
If you want a guided tour of the city you find yourself in but you don't want to get on one of those big busses then check out Pocket Guide. This free app will give you audio tours of Paris, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and other places. But, if the place your currently at isn't included you can get specific tours for an in-app purchase of $5.99.
Let's say you desperately need to rent a car then Zipcar, another free app is what you need. With it you can reserve and pay for a car for temporary use and you can even honk its horn and unlock its doors if you're having trouble finding it.
Next week we'll look at how to communicate with those nice folks in that place you find yourself.
