Second Time's the Charm
by Gary Woods
One of the cool features of iOS 4 in the iPad, iPhone and iPad Touch is the ability to make your icons into Folders. I've spent a lot of time figuring out what I want where so everything is on my Home Page. This way I don't have to be flipping back and forth to find the app I want.
The problem comes when something happens. Either your device dies, gets lost or stolen and you have to reload your new device. All those cool folders you created to make your life easier are now "Gone With the Wind." All your Apps are there but those folders are either not there or they don't have everything you want in them.
Okay, so what are we going to do? First, restore the way you normally would. Plug in your device, click on it under the Devices heading in iTunes, click on Summary View and then click on Restore, restoring to your most recent backup. Then, let the process go synching all your apps, pictures, music and videos.
Now, once everything has stopped, Right-click (control-click for Mac) the device you want to restore in the iTunes' sidebar, and choose "Restore from Backup" from the menu that appears. In the "Restore from Backup" dialog, choose the same back up you chose previously and then click Restore. Wait for the sync to finish and when it's done all your Folders will be back with the Apps you placed in them.
