Somethins’ Comin’ Part 1
At the Apple World Wide Developers Conference on June 8th in San Francisco’s Moscone Center they announced the next iteration of the iPad operating system cleverly called iOS 9. The biggest feature they talked about was a split screen feature Apple calls Split View. It allows you to open two resizable virtual windows on your iPad running two separate applications.
With the feature you’ll be able to transfer data from one window to the other and quickly change the program running inside each panel using a brand-new app switcher. Now for the bad news, while multi-tasking will work on most recent iPad models, Split View will be available only on the iPad Air 2.
There is a feature that will run on all iPads however and it’s called Quick Type, which is an enhancement to the iPad’s onscreen keyboard and includes new shortcuts turning the keyboard into a track pad when you place two fingers on it.
Finally, there’s a new picture-in-picture feature that allows user to display a video in a tiny window that can be moved around or even pushed temporarily off-screen while working on a different app.
The video window also includes a set of simple controls that let you pause the video or close and dismiss it without leaving the current app.
iOS 9 will be out in Beta in July but I definitely don’t recommend getting it then. Wait until the fall public release which probably means some time in September.
