Watch the Watch

The Apple Watch is the product that Apple had to make because everybody was already talking about it.  But, we really won’t get to see it until early in 2015. There are three versions of the watch with one simply called the Watch featuring stainless steel or space black stainless steel cases, a sapphire crystal and a range of stylish bands. Then, there is the Watch Sport which features anodized aluminum cases in silver or space gray. This version has strengthened Ion-X glass and colorful durable bands. And finally there is the Watch Edition which has 18-karat gold cases in yellow or rose, a sapphire crystal and exquisitely crafted bands and closures.

Because using on-screen tapping as we do with iOS devices would be difficult on the watch Apple has turned the crown, which on traditional watches can set the time and wind the watch into an all-purpose controller. You turn it to scroll through information on one screen or zoom in on a photo in another. Pressing the Digital Crown also leads you back to the home screen.

The other button on the watch takes you to a contacts list of friends. From there you’ll be able to send them messages whether it’s scribbling out a little sketch of placing a phone call via your connected iPhone.

The watch talks to you using a physical tap to alert you to notifications. For instance different kinds of taps tell you whether to turn right or left. The watch will come standard with two apps called Activity and Workout with others sure to be in the offing.

At a starting price of $349 the Apple Watch isn’t cheap plus the fact you have to have an iPhone 5 or later to pair with it so it will be interesting to see whether this product that Apple had to make will catch on.
