iPods on the Road!
by Gary Woods The biggest hit to come out of Apple Computers in years is the audio player called the iPod. These devices have become so popular that some automobile manufacturers are making them part of their options packages. BMW for example gives you the option of incorporating iPods directly into your car's sound system. And a new product from audio company Alpine will soon let even more of you hit the open road with your iPod connected to your car stereo. BMW's iPod Adapter - $149 (plus installation) for 2002 and later models of the BMW 3 Series, Z4 Roadster, and X3 and X5 Sports Utility Vehicles has an iPod-auto combination. The adapter runs through the glove box; one end plugs into the car's sound system, and one end hooks up to the dock connector of an iPod. BMW isn't the only car company cashing in on iPod mania. In August, the car company Jaguar gave away a limited-edition black iPod in a contest promoting its X-Type car. And last year, Volkswagen offered an iPod and a connectivity kit for $600 to Beetle drivers in the US. If you don't drive a BMW, Jaguar or Volkswagen Beetle Alpine offers a $100 option called the KCA-420i that will allow you to control your iPod from your stereo's front panel or remote control if your car is equipped with specially made Alpine-made head units. So get out there and start cruising to the tunes.
